Nocturnal Enuresis (Bedwetting)

Loss of urine during sleep, in children and adults alike.

Bedwetting often runs in families: if one parent had it, the child has about a four-in-ten chance of being affected; if both parents did, close to eight in ten.

It can also come from a reduced functional bladder capacity: the bladder signals that it is full at smaller volumes than normal. In most cases, an unstable bladder muscle is involved.

More Informations

Leaks during sleep: a cause to identify, effective treatments.

Definition

Nocturnal enuresis is involuntary loss of urine during sleep. Common in children, in adults it deserves an assessment to find the cause.

Causes

Excessive urine production at night, sleep apnoea, a small-capacity or overactive bladder, sometimes diabetes.

Diagnosis

  • Diary of day and night volumes.
  • Sleep apnoea testing if suspected.
  • Ultrasound and urine tests.

Treatments

Depending on the cause: desmopressin to reduce night-time production, treatment of sleep apnoea, bladder training, adjusting evening drinks. A suitable night protection secures sleep while treatment is set up.

Nateen advice

At night there is no change for several hours, so an absorbency reserve is needed. The Combi Ultra brief with tabs or Flexi Ultra underwear, with a Mati underpad, help keep the bed dry until morning.
